Permit or Not

Terms

This is guidance, not a decision

Everything here describes what is typically required. It is not a permit determination, and it is not legal, engineering or architectural advice. Your local building department is the only body that can tell you what your project actually requires, and their answer governs.

We may be wrong about your jurisdiction

Roughly twenty thousand US authorities issue building permits and each can amend the code it adopts. Where we have not read a jurisdiction’s rules we say so and fall back to the national model code. Confirm before you build.

No service relationship

We do not prepare, file, or pull permits, and using this site does not create any professional relationship. We are not architects, engineers, contractors or attorneys.

Liability

The site is provided as is. Decisions you make about your property are yours, and we accept no liability for work carried out — or not carried out — on the basis of what you read here.
